All weavings are
perfectly square or rectangular.
Sandpainting style weavings are based upon ceremonial sandpaintings,
and are usually square in shape. Sandpainting style
rugs portray the spiritual realm of the Navajo people, and
are therefore somewhat controversial amongst weavers.
The
weaving may depict supernatural beings, the spirits of the
earth and the sky, and native creatures and plants.
Common elements in Sandpainting rugs include snakes, lizards,
feathers and other ceremonial objects.
The
area of the Navajo Nation around Shiprock, NM is known for
originating Sandpainting style weavings. Sandpainting
rugs are very rare and thus, are very expensive Navajo weavings.
