A Pictorial weaving
is a woven journal of the features of a weaver's daily life
in Navajoland. Many Pictorial rugs are landscapes
with mesas, mountains, clouds, hogans, sheep, cattle, horses,
a corral, wagons and pickup trucks, and the Navajo People
themselves. All the things involved with modern daily
life are depicted in Pictorial weavings. The
colors used are appropriate to the subject matter; blue
skies, green junipers, and black and white sheep.
Many Pictorial weavings are still woven without perspective
or shading, but some weavers today are producing surprisingly
realistic pictures.
